TAKE NINAGAWA GALLERY PRESENTS A GROUP OF NEW WORKS BY JAPANESE ARTIST SHINRO OHTAKE.
By Farah Nasser-Sion
While he is best recognized for his mixed-media scrapbooks and structural assemblages, which have been presented at exhibitions including documenta 12 and the Venice Biennale, Ohtake maintains a protean, conceptually driven practice.
Gathering, gestating, cutting and pasting are key activities in Ohtake’s practice of sculpture, architectural installation and three-dimensional collage.
For Miami Beach he is completing a new mixed-media work which is a radical departure from the frenetic collisions of color, material and images that characterize his practice. Made using only black and white colors, and with spare shapes, the work rests uneasily between the positions of painting, collage and sculpture.
